History of Surname in Japan
So let's look at the history of the surname.
Before Heian period
In ancient times (before the Heian period), there were two types of surnames, "Uji / 氏" and "Kabane / 姓".
Nowadays, both "Uji" and "Kabane" are used to mean the same surname(Myozi / 名字).
What is "Uji / 氏"?
Uji means clan (a group of people related by blood) and each clan was assigned duties within the royal authority.
What is "Kabane / 姓"?
Kabane was originally a title given to a clan by a great royal family in ancient times.
Heian period (794-1185)
At the end of the Heian period, surnames were born. The roots of the surname differ between the surnames of noblemen, called kuge(公家), and those of samurai.
The origin of surname of Kuge(公家)
Surnames of Kuge begin with place of residence. In the Heian period (794-1185), the Fujiwara clans, which were very powerful, became too numerous.
So they began to distinguish themselves by taking the name of the place in Kyoto where their residences were located.
The Origin of surname of Samurai
The surnames of the samurai began as "the name of their domain.
Like the court nobles, many samurai had the same surname, which made it difficult to distinguish them.
Since the main job of the samurai was to protect the farmland owned by the nobility, they took the name of the land they controlled as their surname.
Edo period (1603-1868)
In the Edo period (1603-1868), surnames were further used for identification purposes.
Since the surname became a symbol of status, only the privileged classes such as the samurai and a few commoners were allowed to take the surname.
Meiji period (1868-1912)
As part of the modernization policy of the new Meiji government, there was a debate if all citizens should have surname which had been a "privilege".
In the end, it was decided that all citizens, including the common people, would officially have a surname due to the need to keep track of all citizens and to organize family registers.
How did people get their surnames?
Due to the laws and regulations of the Meiji era, people who had been forbidden to take a family name were suddenly required to have one.
How did people come to have surnames?
According to Kaju.Inc, There are several ways to decide surname:
- Surname that was allowed to use from Edo period (Some people are allowed to use)
- Surname that had before the edo period but was not allowed to use
- Surname that was given by local master and priest of temple
Merchants and farmers were forbidden to have surnames in the Edo period due to the status system, but it is said that they used yago(屋号) because it was difficult to identify people without surnames.

Yago(屋号) - Trade Name Used in Rural Areas of Japan
